Meet Deborah, the physiotherapist who will treat you

A single-handed practice on Roumelia Lane in Boscombe. The person who assesses you in the first appointment is the person who treats you in the fourth.

One physiotherapist, start to finish

Larger clinics rota their staff. You are assessed by one physiotherapist, treated by a second the following week, and by the third appointment you are explaining your history again from the beginning. It is not anybody's fault, it is just how a rota works.

This is a solo practice, so that does not happen. Deborah takes the assessment, does the treatment, writes the plan and adjusts it as you go. Nothing gets handed on and nothing gets lost between appointments.

In practice it means the small things carry across. If your neck was worse on the Tuesday after a bad night, that is remembered. If an exercise was uncomfortable, it gets changed rather than repeated.

Most of Deborah's work is everyday neck and back pain: office workers whose posture has caught up with them, people recovering from whiplash after a road traffic accident, and the aches that come from a week spent at a screen. Day-to-day problems in day-to-day people, treated properly.

Work out what is going on, then say so plainly

Every appointment starts with the same two questions: what is the problem, and what do you need to get back to. Those answers shape everything else, because rehab for someone who wants to run a half marathon in April looks different to rehab for someone who wants to lift a grandchild without wincing.

After that comes a physical assessment: how the area moves, how much strength is there, what provokes the symptoms and what settles them. Then an explanation of what the findings mean, in language you can repeat to someone else that evening.

The plan is deliberately short. A handful of exercises that matter, done properly, beat a printed sheet of twelve that nobody has time for.

What an appointment is actually like

If you have never seen a physiotherapist privately, here is the shape of it, so nothing is a surprise.

  1. Talking, first

What hurts, how long it has been going on, what makes it better or worse, and what you have already tried. Bring any scan results or a discharge letter if you have them.

  2. Assessment

Movement, strength and how the area behaves under load. You stay in comfortable clothing you can move in. Nothing happens without being explained first.

  3. Treatment and a plan

Where it is appropriate, treatment starts in that first appointment rather than the next one. You leave knowing what the problem is, what you are doing about it, and roughly how long it should take.

One room on Roumelia Lane, not a waiting hall

The clinic is at Shop 2, 4-6 Roumelia Ln, Boscombe. It is a small, quiet room rather than a busy sports centre, which suits people who find gyms off-putting and people who simply want to be heard without a queue behind them.

Appointments run to 20:00 on weekdays and on Saturday afternoons, so treatment does not have to cost you a morning of annual leave.
