What happens at a first appointment
Nothing about it is designed to catch you out. If you have never seen a physiotherapist before, this is the whole of it.
-
Talking
When it started, what makes it worse and better, what you have already tried, and what it is stopping you doing. That last one shapes the plan more than anything else, so it is worth thinking about before you come.
-
Looking and moving
An assessment of how the area moves and how it copes with a bit of demand. Wear or bring clothing you can move in, and something that lets the relevant area be seen: shorts for a knee or hip, a vest or t-shirt for a shoulder or back.
-
Treatment and a plan
Hands-on treatment on the day where it is appropriate, an explanation in plain English of what is going on, and a short set of exercises to start with. You leave knowing what you are doing and roughly how long it should take.
If the assessment turns up something better handled by a GP or a consultant, you will be told that plainly rather than sold a course of treatment. More questions people ask before booking.
