Massage therapy, delivered by a physiotherapist
Swedish massage and lymphatic drainage for muscular tension, recovery and relaxation. It sits alongside physiotherapy rather than standing in for it.
Recovery and wellness, not a spa treatment
Massage therapy here is offered within physiotherapy scope, for the muscular tension that builds through a busy week, a hard training block or long hours at a desk. It is about easing tight, tired muscles, supporting recovery, and giving the body a chance to relax, rather than a pampering session.
Two approaches are available. Swedish massage uses flowing, kneading strokes to ease muscular tension and calm the nervous system. Lymphatic drainage uses lighter, rhythmic movements to encourage the body's own fluid movement, which some people find helps with heaviness and swelling.
Because it is delivered by a physiotherapist, it sits within a clinical understanding of how muscles and tissues behave. If something more than tension is going on, that gets noticed and talked through rather than worked over.
How it fits alongside physiotherapy
Massage is a useful companion to treatment, not a replacement for it. Where physiotherapy assesses and treats a specific problem and builds a plan to resolve it, massage helps the surrounding muscle relax, eases everyday tension, and supports the recovery around a training week or a stressful stretch of work.
For some people it is part of a wider plan: a way to settle tight tissue so the exercise and hands-on work land more easily. For others it stands on its own as recovery and relaxation, chosen simply because muscles are tired and tense and it helps to have that eased.
Either way, it is a physiotherapist's hands and judgement. If a massage session flags something that would be better assessed and treated properly, you will hear that, and you can move onto physiotherapy without starting again somewhere new.
What a session actually involves
A massage session is straightforward and unhurried, with a short conversation first so the work suits what your body needs that day.
-
A short conversation first
A few questions about where you are holding tension, how you have been training or working, and what you want from the session, whether that is easing a tight area, supporting recovery, or simply time to relax. If anything sounds like it needs proper assessment, that is flagged before the massage begins.
-
The massage itself
Swedish massage or lymphatic drainage, or a blend, worked at a pressure that suits you. The aim is to ease muscular tension and settle the nervous system, not to push through pain. You can ask for more or less pressure at any point, and the pace stays comfortable throughout.
-
Afterwards
A moment to come round, a drink of water, and any simple suggestions for keeping the area relaxed between sessions. If the session pointed to something worth assessing, you can talk about moving onto physiotherapy, with no pressure either way.
Massage therapy pricing is confirmed before you book. Ask by email at deborah@fitphysiotherapy.co.uk, or book an appointment and the cost is confirmed with you first.
